Each regional Road Runner cable modem service uses one of three login authentication systems: TAS, HP, Digital. Refer to the Regions page to determine which one your service uses.

Note: The authentication method used is not related to the type of cable modem used. For example, in San Diego Motorola cable modems are used but the authentication system is TAS.

Toshiba Authentication System (TAS)

Overview

The Toshiba Authentication System uses no password encryption at all. It transmits your username and password in the clear!

Servers

The authentication servers can be found by doing a DNS lookup for 'tas.' This will be a CNAME (DNS alias) for a host which handles authentication for your particular node on your regional Road Runner network.

Protocol

A detailed protocol specification will be made available soon.

Hewlett Packard (HP)

Overview

The Digital authentication system uses Kerberos V for password encryption and authentication.

Servers

The authentication servers can be found by doing a DNS lookup for 'dce-server.' This will be a CNAME (DNS alias) for a host which handles authentication for your particular node on your regional Road Runner network.

Protocol

A detailed protocol specification will be made available soon.

Digital

Overview

The Digital authentication system uses MD5 for password encryption.

Servers

The authentication servers can be found by doing a DNS lookup for 'logon-server.' This will be a CNAME (DNS alias) for a host which handles authentication for your particular node on your regional Road Runner network. The port address for the TCP socket connection is typically 60000 or 60001.

Protocol

For everything you wanted to know, but were affraid to ask, about the Digital authentication system, download the full protocol spec in PDF format here:
